Superman has the honour of being the first established superhero to have his own videogame. The self-titled Superman for the Atari 2600 initially released alongside the film of the same name in December 1978, before enjoying a wider full production release in January 1979. It found a chunky representation of the hero racing to capture Lex Luthor before returning to the Daily Planet as quickly as possible. It was designed by John Dunn (USA) and published by Atari, and was the first game written for the then-new Atari 4K ROMs. Dunn told GWR: "Superman was my favourite comic-book hero from childhood so I thought doing a game based on this character would be cool. But it was the opportunity to do better graphics than had been done previously that pulled me in. By using the 4k chips I would have double the memory space, almost all of it for improved graphics."
