Atari's Raiders of the Lost Ark, was the first game based on an official movie licence. It was released on the Atari 2600 in 1982, narrowly beating the game of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.

Atari’s Superman (1978) was the first videogame to be tied into a movie release. It is also widely believed that Exidy’s 1976 coin-op Death Race was inspired by the satirical action movie Death Race 2000 (1975).
