Longest-running space combat simulator

The Wing Commander series is both the highest-selling and longest-running space combat game of all time, selling five million units in total. Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger sold over one million units, making it the first PC game to break the one million sales mark. The series ran for 18 years, from 1990 (Wing Commander) to 2007 (Wing Commander Arena), longer than any other space combat series.
