According to publisher Sierra On-Line and creator Al Lowe, more hint books were sold for Leisure Suit Larry In The Land Of The Lounge Lizards than copies of the actual game itself. This is believed to be due to the large number of pirated copies made of the game following its release in 1987. In the first year, Al Lowe has claimed “millions” of books were sold yet only 250,000 copies of the game had been bought in that time.
