The earliest backward compatible hand-held video game console was the Game Boy Colour, Launched in October 1998. It introduced backward compatibility for the first time to video game consoles, meaning gamers could play games from the original Game Boy and Game Boy Pocket on the new system. Since then all later Game Boy models as well as Nintendo home consoles have included this feature as standard. This idea of backward compatibility also later became a big selling point for Sony with the PlayStation 2.
