The first action-adventure videogame was released in 1979 for the Atari 600. The gameplay involved exploring a multi-screen landscape containing castles, mazes and rooms to locate keys and items to further progress through the game. Although the graphics were primitive – the player character, for example, is represented by a simple square cursor – it was considered revolutionary for bucking traditional gaming conventions, such as scores and time limits, and it sold over 1.3 m copies. It was also the first videogame to feature a "Easter Egg".
