The first guitar-based rhythm-action game was GuitarFreaks, released by Konami in Japan in 1998. The GuitarFreaks series, which lets players jam along to music using a guitar-shaped controller, would later inspire the likes of Guitar Hero. As of 3 January 2016, a whopping 37 GuitarFreaks games had been released in arcades and on home consoles!
