The earliest use of parrying in fighting videogames is in Soul Edge, released in the arcades in 1995 and ported to the original PlayStation soon after, where it was released in Europe, North America and Australia as Soul Blade. Parrying, a subtle form of blocking designed to unbalance an opponent in order to draw him into a counter-strike, is distinguished from blocking by the way in which it can be adapted, mid-move, to form the basis for any number of retaliatory strikes or throws. Parrying in Soul Edge is part of the "Guard Edge" impact set.
