Perhaps unsurprisingly, the first basketball videogame was simply titled Basketball! and was built for the Magnavox Odyssey. The game was released in 1973, the year after this first-generation console first hit stores. Like many Magnavox titles, Basketball used plastic overlays placed over the TV screen to make the basic blocky graphics seem more visually appealing.

The first four basketball videogames were all named "basketball", although the version for the Magnavox Odyssey2 had an exclamation mark at the end.

The Magnavox Odyssey was the first ever videogame console.
