The largest ball court in ancient Mesoamerica is the Great Ball Court in the Mayan city of Chich’en Itzá in the Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico. It was used to play the Mesoamerican ballgame, a sport with ritual associations played for over 3,000 years by the pre-Columbian peoples. The court measures 166 x 68 m (545 x 232 ft). The imposing walls are 12 m (39 ft) high and, in the centre, high up on each of the long walls are rings carved with intertwining serpents.
