With no major home console competition for over a decade now EA's Madden NFL is the dominant NFL videogame franchise. Since the first game in the series, John Madden Football, hit the stores in 1988 there have been 28 entries in the main series, as well as a number of separate spin-off titles. As of 21 January 2016, the current game in the series is Madden NFL 16.
The last major rival release to Madden was ESPN NFL 2K5 (Visual Concepts, 2004).
