The 1993 release Super Mario Bros., starring British actor Bob Hoskins as Mario the plumber and Colombian-born John Leguizamo as his brother Luigi, was the first example of a major motion picture to be based on an existing videogame. Although not a huge critical or commercial success at the time, the film has gone on to attain cult status.
