The first video game to allow the user to control the camera independently of the character was Super Mario 64, created by Nintendo in 1996. Instead of a fixed perspective from behind the main character, like previous 3D games, Super Mario 64 allowed the camera to be rotated around Mario, and zoomed in and out. This has now become standard in third-person gaming.
