Although 1992's Super Mario Kart kickstarted and defined the genre, the videogame many perceive as the first kart racer is Power Drift, released to arcade halls by Sega in 1988. The game featured cartoonish looking characters racing across narrow, winding courses. It was ported to home computers by Activision in 1989.
