To date, some 15 minor satellite galaxies have been discovered orbiting our Milky Way galaxy, the most recent having been discovered in 2006. Of these the largest and brightest is the Large Magellanic Cloud, some 160,000 light years from the centre of the Milky Way. It is classed as a dwarf irregular galaxy and measures around 20,000 light years across, with a mass of around 10 billion solar masses.
