In terms of longevity and diversity the most successful group of dinosaurs were the therapods. They were bipedal and mainly carnivorous and dominated the land from around 200 million years ago right up to the extinction of the dinosaurs some 65 million years ago. Allosaurus grew up to around 10 m (33 ft) long and was the largest land-based carnivore of the late Jurassic (144-150 million years ago) and existed some 85 million years Tyrannosaurus rex.
