The largest cave-dwelling animals are the remarkable salt-mining African elephants (Loxodonta africana) of Kitum Cave, on Mount Elgon, Kenya. Although they do not live here permanently, they regularly enter the cave and travel underground in search of the precious salt that they dig out with their tusks, and which they need for dietary purposes, and have done so for many generations.
