The world’s most southerly tree fern is Cyathea smithii, a rather large species with a slender trunk, standing up to 8 m (26 ft) tall, and sporting tripinnate fronds that attain a length of up to 2.5 m (9 ft) when mature. This species is native not only to the cool mountain forests of New Zealand, but also to the subantarctic Auckland Islands, and, as might be expected, is one of New Zealand’s cold-hardiest tree ferns.
