Native to Antarctica, the world’s largest species of petrel is the giant petrel (Macronectes giganteus), with a length of approximately 90 cm (3 ft), and a wingspan exceeding 2 m (6 ft 6 in), thus approaching the size of a small albatross. Foraging here both on land and at sea for carrion, these very formidable birds will also attack and kill other creatures as large as king penguins and isolated seal pups.
