Longest time without food, bird species
- Who
- Male emperor penguin
- When
- 01 January 0001
The longest continuous fast on record for any bird was an incredible 134 days for a male emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri). Once a male emperor penguin arrives on land from the sea, it does not usually eat while travelling overland to the breeding colony, courting a female, incubating their single egg for 62–67 days (a job that the female takes no part in), waiting for the female to return, and travelling back to the sea. Only when it reaches the sea once more does it feed again. However, it is able to survive this enforced fast (during which period its body weight falls by half) by surviving on plentiful reserves of subcutaneous fat, which can be 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 in) thick.
