The world’s most common shark is the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias), which occurs in cold and temperate marine waters worldwide. Supporting important fisheries in several countries, the record catch for this species probably occurred in 1904–05, when some 27 million spiny dogfishes were caught off the coast of Massachusetts, USA, alone.
