The world’s smallest rattlesnake is the pygmy rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius), which inhabits wooded areas, preferably close to rivers or lakes, in the southeastern United States. Even adult specimens are less than 45 cm (18 in) long. The rattle is so tiny that it makes a faint buzzing sound only audible for up to 1 m (3 ft) or so away. Despite its small size, however, this species is very venomous, and frequently bites humans.
