The world’s largest species of grouse is the capercaillie Tetrao urogallus, native to northern European pine forests. Adult males are black or very dark grey and weigh up to 4 kg (8 lb 13 oz), adult females are brown and weigh up to around 2 kg (4 lb 6 oz). It became extinct in Scotland during the 17th century, but was successfully reintroduced from Sweden during the 1830s.
