The world’s smallest artiodactyl – even-toed hoofed mammal – is the lesser Malay chevrotain or lesser mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus). This tiny ungulate is no bigger than a rabbit, sporting in the adult male (smaller than the female) a head-and-body length of only 44–48 cm (17.3–18.8 in), a tail length of 6.5–8 cm (2.5–3.1 in), and a shoulder height of just 20–25 cm (7.8–9.8 in), and weighs a mere 1.7–3 kg (3 lb 12 oz–6 lb 9 oz). This minuscule mammal inhabits the tropical rainforests and mangrove swamps of southeast Asia.
