Most international rugby union tests refereed

The most international rugby union matches refereed is 111, achieved by Wayne Barnes (UK) between 24 June 2006 and 28 October 2023.

Barnes announced his retirement from refereeing following the final of the 2023 Rugby World Cup between South Africa and New Zealand, during which he produced the first-ever red card in a men’s final, to New Zealand captain Sam Cane. Over the course of 17 years, Barnes officiated at five World Cups, overseeing a record 27 games. His 26 Six Nations games is also a record. He made his international debut at the 2006 Pacific 5 Nations tournament, refereeing Fiji’s 23–20 win over Samoa.
