It is the job of the "foley artist" to record live sound effects – such as footsteps, rustling newspapers, banging doors, and so on – to synchronize with the action on screen (above). The job is named after Jack Foley (USA), who performed this role at Universal Studios (USA) from the dawn of the "talkies". Foley's career in sound effects began with Show Boat (USA, 1929) and during his 40-year career he is estimated to have walked 8,000 km (5,000 miles) on the spot, recording the sound of footsteps for the likes of James Cagney, Marlon Brando and Kirk Douglas (all USA).
