The heaviest artiodactyl (even-toed ungulate mammal) is the common hippo Hippopotamus amphibius native to rivers, lakes and swamps – and their surrounding grasslands – in sub-Saharan Africa, which can weigh in excess of 2,600 kilograms (5,800 pounds).
An upper limit of 8,000 lb (3,630 kg) is sometimes cited, but this figure is based on a historical rough estimate rather than a specific individual.
