To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the original 1227 Anglepoise® lamp, which was designed in the 1930s by automotive engineer George Carwardine (UK), Anglepoise (UK) have released a model three times larger than the original. Known as the Type3, it has a reach of 2.7 m (8 ft 10 in) and a shade diameter of 44.5 cm (1 ft 6 in). It is commercially available and retails for £1,660 ($3,125). George Carwardine (1887-1948) patented his unique spring design on 7 July 1932, basing his lamp on the constant-tension principle of the human arm. He sold the license to Herbert Terry & Sons of Redditch, Worcestershire, UK, and attempted to name his invention the Equipoise, although this was refused by the UK Patent Office as the word was already in existence. So, in 1934, the first industrial versions of the Anglepoise went on sale.
