In December 2006 OC Robotics (UK) announced it had successfully designed and built a snake-like robot arm with 27 degrees of freedom. Built for the airline manufacturer Airbus, this arm is designed to be able to reach inside very restrictive enclosed spaces during the manufacturing of large aircraft. Degrees of freedom are indicators of movement capability. A human shoulder has three, pitch roll and yaw, while a human elbow has only one. Honda’s ASIMO robot has 26 degrees of freedom in total.
