In 2016, New Zealand claimed their fifth OFC Nations Cup when they defeated Papua New Guinea 4–2 in a penalty shoot-out on 11 June. The win took them past Australia’s tally of four wins – having left the Oceania Football Confederation for the Asian Football Confederation in 2006. Australia are no longer eligible for the tournament.
