The greatest concentration of large mammals currently in existence anywhere in the world is a herd of northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) that breed mostly on St George and St Paul – two islands in Alaska’s Pribilof group with a combined area of 75.1 sq mi (194.5 km²). Reaching a peak of approximately 2.5 million animals during the late 1950s, extensive hunting reduced their numbers significantly, but currently they are back to just under 1 million.
