According to yearly statistics gathered by the American Kennel Club (AKC), out of 153 breeds acknowledged by the AKC for 2006, the most popular purebreed in the USA was the Labrador Retriever with 123,760 dogs registered in 2006. The results were announced to the Press at the Rockefeller Center, New York, USA on 15 January 2007. The Labrador retriever, which has held the US top spot since 1991, was also the most popular in Canada and UK in 2005.
According to the American Kennel Club, the most popular dog breeds in the USA as of 2011, were:

2 German Shepherd Dogs
3 Beagles
4 Golden Retrievers
5 Yorkshire Terriers
6 Bulldogs
7 Boxers
8 Poodles
9 Dachshunds
10 Rottweilers
The Labrador Retriever was also the most popular dog breed in the UK as of 2011, according to the UK Kennel Club. In order of dogs registered that year, the figures for the UK were:
