Pluto, which lost its status as a true planet in 2006, has five known moons: Charon, discovered in 1978, Nix and Hydra, discovered in 2005, and two others discovered in 2011 and 2012 and provisionally named S/2011 P 1 and S/2012 P 1. Its largest moon, Charon, at around 1,207 km across has more than half Pluto’s diameter and many regard Pluto and Charon as a binary dwarf planet.
