Highest rate of abortions (country)

In Russia in 2004, there were 1.6 million registered legal abortions. Not only is this the highest figure for any country, and the highest figure per capita, it is also higher than the number of live births in Russia in the same year (1.5 million).According to the Federal Statistics Service, Russia's population could plummet to 77 million by the middle of the century. The UN Human Development Report places the number of legal abortions in Russia at over 2.7 million.
