The 2024 edition of the Environmental Performance Index, produced jointly by Yale University and Columbia University (both USA) since 2002, ranks Vietnam as the country with the worst environmental record, with an overall score of 24.6.

EPI scores take into account 58 different criteria across 11 key areas including air pollution, climate-change policy, biodiversity protection and sustainable farming/fishing.

The bottom five countries in 2024 were as follows:

  • Vietnam: 24.6
  • Pakistan: 25.5
  • Laos: 26.3
  • Myanmar: 27.1
  • India: 27.6

At the other end of the scale was Estonia with a 2024 EPI score of 75.7.
