Jon Favreau's 2019 remake of Disney's The Lion King (USA, 1994) has grossed $1,655,425,631 (£1.28 billion) at the worldwide box office as of 29 November 2019, according to The-Numbers.com, overtaking the live-action remake of another Disney classic, Beauty and the Beast (USA, 1991). It has also become the sixth highest-grossing movie of all time.

This new "live-action" remake of the hand- and computer-animated original is in fact a digitally rendered photo-realistic animation – with the exception of the very first shot, which was filmed in Africa. "There are 1,490 rendered shots created by animators and CG artists," said director Favreau in an Instagram post. "I slipped in one single shot that we actually photographed in Africa to see if anyone would notice. It is the first shot of the movie that begins 'The Circle of Life'."

The Lion King 2019 is not a shot-for-shot remake, although some iconic scenes from the original movie have been recreated almost exactly.

The cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles as Nala, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Alfre Woodard as Sarabi, John Oliver as Zazu and, in a reprise of his role in the 1994 version, James Earl Jones as Mufasa.
