The highest-grossing movie at the worldwide box office based on a videogame is The Super Mario Bros. Movie (USA, 2023), which had taken $1,359,146,628 (£1,079,434,254) from its global release on 5 April 2023 to 19 February 2025, according to The Numbers.
The animated fantasy is inspired by Nintendo's Mario franchise. Moustachioed plumber Mario first appeared in 1981's Donkey Kong arcade game, as "Jumpman". Its success prompted the 1982 sequel Donkey Kong Jr., in which Mario appeared under his own name.
He made his first appearance as a title character in Mario Bros. (1983), which also introduced his brother, Luigi.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie proved a miss with the critics but a record-breaking hit with the public. The film sees the brothers transported to the Mushroom World through a magical Warp Pipe, while fixing an underground water main in New York City. They become separated. Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) finds himself in the mysterious Mushroom Kingdom, where he embarks on a quest to find Luigi, aided by one of the kingdom's citizens, Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and its ruler, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy).
