The highest-grossing sports movie is The Karate Kid (China/Hong Kong/USA, 2010), which has earned $351,774,938 (£224.9 million) at the worldwide box office, according to The-Numbers.com. Starring Jaden Smith as 12-year-old Dre Parker and Jackie Chan as maintenance man and kung-fu master Mr Han, the movie is a Chinese remake of the American original, relocating the action to Beijing and featuring, despite its title, the martial art of kung fu.
In the movie, Dre moves from the USA to China and finds it difficult to fit in; when he's picked on by school bully Cheng, maintenance man Mr Han teaches Dre kung fu and enters him into a tournament, where the young novice must face off against his rival Cheng. The screenplay, by Christopher Murphey, was adapted from the original 1984 movie script written by Robert Mark Kamen.
