U2 (Ireland/UK) are the most decorated group in the history of the Grammy Awards, with 22 statues to their name since 1988. Their accolades include Album of the Year for The Joshua Tree (1988) and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (2006), Record of the Year for “Beautiful Day” (2001) and “Walk On” (2002), and Song of the Year for “Beautiful Day” and “Sometimes You Can’t Make It on Your Own” (2006).

U2’s most successful year was 2006, when they picked up five Grammys at the 48th edition for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, adding to the three trophies won by lead single “Vertigo” in 2005. Dismantle producer Steve Lillywhite also received individual recognition as Producer of the Year - Non-Classical, bringing the album’s total number of awards won to a record-equalling nine. In 2000, Santana’s Supernatural collected nine awards including Song of the Year, which went to the songwriters of lead single “Smooth” (Itaal Shur and vocalist Rob Thomas) rather than the group itself. The awards won by Lillywhite and Shur/Thomas make both albums the most successful ever at the Grammys, ahead of Michael Jackson’s Thriller (eight Grammys in 1984, including Producer of the Year - Non-Classical and Best Engineered Album - Non-Classical) and Ray Charles’ Genius Loves Company (eight Grammys in 2005, including Best Engineered Album - Non-Classical, Best Arrangement - Instruments and Vocals and Best Surround Sound Album).
