The most wins of the African Footballer of the Year Award is four, achieved by two players: Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon) in 2003–05 and 2010; and Yaya Toure (Côte d'Ivoire) in 2011–14.
The magazine France Football awarded a prize for the African Player of the Year from 1970–1994, while Afrique Football awarded a similar prize from 1991 to 2003. Since 1992, the official award has been handed out by the Confederation of African Football.
