In January 2006, Hammacher Schlemmer & Company Inc.(USA) announced the release of the first ever hoverboard. The Levitating Hover Scooter hovers a few inches or approximately 10 cm above the ground and has a top speed of 24 km/h (15 mph). The rider controls the direction by transfering their weight, and modifes the engine/fan speed by levers on the airboard's handlebars. The five-litre (1.3 -gallon) engine will provide up to one hour's worth of travel and costs $17,000 (then £9,700).
