Most stage wins of the Tour of Spain mountain

Roberto Heras Hernandez (Spain) – riding for teams Kelme (1996–2000), US Postal (2001–03) and Liberty (2004–05) – has won nine mountain top stage victories (out of 10 stage wins) during his nine Vuelta a España (Tour of Spain) races. Considered one of the world’s best climbers – he shepherded multiple Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong through the mountains for three years – Heras last donned the gold jersey on 18 September 2005 in Madrid. Known as the Vuelta a España in Spain, the Tour of Spain was instituted in 1935. Heras has completed all nine of his races, his worst perfomance being an overall sixth place in 1998. However, he was stripped of his 2005 title following a two-year ban for EPO.
