The concrete dome of the Pantheon in Rome, Italy, which measures 43 m (142 ft) across, has the greatest span of any dome constructed only of masonry (that is, unreinforced stone or brick). It rises 22 m (71 ft) above its base, was built by the emperor Hadrian in AD 118 - 128, and has a greater span than the famous domes of the great medieval cathedrals of Florence (Santa Maria del Fiore), Rome (St Peter's) and London (St Paul's).
