The largest building carved out of a single piece of rock is the Kailasa temple at the Ellora cave complex in the Maharashtra province of India. It is approximately 50 m (164 ft) long, 33 m (108 ft) wide and 30 m (100 ft) high at its tallest point. Construction of the temple, which involved the removal of between 150,000 and 200,000 tonnes of rock, started in the 8th century. The Ellora complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
