Permafrost, or permanently frozen ground, accounts for around 15% of the Earth's land surface and occurs in China, Canada, Alaska and Siberia. The deepest permafrost occurs in Siberia, where the ground is constantly frozen to a depth of around 1,000 m (3,200 ft).
