Since the first World Ice Golf Championship was held in March 1999 in Uummannaq, Greenland, two players have both gone onto win the Championship title twice. Annika Östberg of Denmark won in 2000 and 2001, followed by Roger Beames (UK)'s consecutive wins in 2002 and 2003. Each year, 20 international golfers (with a handicap up to 36) compete in a two-day tournament, 600 km (372 miles) north of the Arctic Circle. The 36-stroke course is played on a fjord, frozen from December to May, in temperatures averaging -13.9°C (7°F), but often falling to -25°C (-13°F).
Due to extreme weather conditions, the 2005 championship was cancelled. The fifth championship is due to be held 25 and 26 March 2006.
The course holds the record for the northermost golf course.
