The European Player of the Year award also known as ‘Ballon d’Or” has been awarded since 1956 by the French Football magazine France Football, and has been won on three occasions by three footballers: Johan Cruyff (Netherlands) in 1971 and 1973-74; Michel Platini (France) in 1983-85; and Marco Van Basten (Netherlands) in 1988-89 and 1992.
