Most bioluminescent squid

The firefly squid (Watasenia scintillans) inhabits the waters around northern Japan. This luminous deep-sea squid grows to around 6 cm (2.5 in) in length, and weighs around 9 g (0.3 oz). It emits intermittent flashes of brilliant light, which resemble those created by fireflies, hence its common name.
