According to the Statistics Yearbook, compiled by the Brazilian Public Safety Forum, there were 47,106 murders in Brazil during the year 2012 – the most intentional killings per calendar year in any country not at war. This was closely followed by India, with 42,934 murders in 2011 (the most recent year for which published data exists). Brazil’s figure represents a 7.8% increase on the number of murders in the country during 2011 (43,909), and corresponds to 24.5 murders per 100,000 of the population.
The highest rate within Brazil was found in the state of Alagoas, which saw 61.8 murders per 100,000 population during 2012.
