The highest speed ever reached in an aircraft propelled only by human power is 44.26 km/h (27.5 mph) by Holger Rochelt (Germany) in Musculair II at Oberschleissheim, Germany on 2 October 1985. The lightweight flying machine, constructed by the pilot's father, Gunther Rochelt, weighed only 25 kg (55 lb) empty, despite having a massing wingspan of 19.5 m (64 ft).
